Marketing attribution · Salesforce architecture

Connect marketing activity to pipeline decisions leaders can trust

Unify source, campaign, identity, opportunity, and revenue data across HubSpot and Salesforce—then define attribution rules the business can actually use.

The business friction

Every dashboard is technically correct, but each one answers a different question with a different definition of revenue.

  • UTMs disappear before an opportunity is created
  • Contacts, accounts, and opportunities do not connect cleanly
  • Marketing optimizes to leads while sales manages pipeline

The operating outcome

Marketing and sales share a traceable view of which programs create demand, influence pipeline, and earn the next dollar of investment.

Measures we establish before build

  • Source and campaign completeness
  • Pipeline created and influenced by program
  • Conversion, velocity, and cost by segment

The system trace

Attribution is a chain of evidence, not a chart type

A useful model preserves the first signal, connects people to accounts and opportunities, applies an agreed policy, and makes data gaps visible.

  1. Stage 1

    Tag

    A campaign reaches the market

Campaign, channel, creative, offer, and cost conventions are established before activity creates records.

    Evidence retained

Campaign ID, UTM taxonomy, spend period

  2. Stage 2

    Capture

A known or anonymous person engages

Form, event, ad, content, and outbound responses retain original and recent context through consented identity resolution.

    Evidence retained

    Touch timestamp, source, identity confidence

  3. Stage 3

    Connect

A person joins an account or buying motion

Contacts, roles, accounts, campaigns, and opportunities are related using explicit membership and matching rules.

    Evidence retained

    Relationship type, campaign membership, role

  4. Stage 4

    Credit

    Pipeline reaches an agreed milestone

First-touch, sourced, influenced, or weighted models apply only where the evidence meets the agreed standard.

    Evidence retained

    Model version, credited touches, exclusions

  5. Stage 5

    Decide

    Teams plan spend and capacity

Leaders compare contribution, conversion, cost, velocity, and data confidence before changing budget or programs.

    Evidence retained

    Decision-ready reporting and quality score

System capabilities

Build the evidence layer behind go-to-market investment

Measurement strategy

Define sourced, influenced, accepted, pipeline, revenue, and cost so the model answers specific business questions.

Campaign architecture

Create naming, hierarchy, membership, status, and cost conventions that survive across HubSpot, Salesforce, and ad platforms.

Identity and relationship mapping

Connect leads and contacts to the right accounts, buying roles, campaigns, and opportunities with confidence and exception paths.

Lifecycle synchronization

Align stage, status, source, ownership, and conversion changes between HubSpot and Salesforce without circular updates.

Attribution policy

Implement first-touch, source, influence, or weighted logic with versioned rules and explicit exclusions—not a black box.

Executive and operator views

Give leaders investment signals while giving operators the record-level evidence needed to fix gaps and explain the totals.

Governance & reliability

Built to survive the edge cases

The workflow is only production-ready when access, ambiguity, failure, and change have an explicit operating path.

G1

Definition governance

Metrics have owners, written inclusion rules, effective dates, and a change process so history does not silently move.

G2

Data-confidence reporting

Unknown source, missing campaign members, unmatched contacts, and orphaned opportunities are measured beside performance.

G3

Consent and retention boundaries

Tracking and identity resolution respect approved consent, access, and retention policies across the stack.

G4

Reconciliation by design

Pipeline and revenue totals tie back to Salesforce, while spend totals tie back to their financial or media source.

Delivery path

From operating truth to a system people can run

Each phase ends with a concrete artifact and a decision. The sequence protects the build from assumptions that usually surface too late.

  1. 01

    Name the decisions

We identify the budget, channel, program, and capacity decisions attribution must support before choosing a model.

    Decision artifact

    Measurement brief and metric dictionary

  2. 02

    Audit the evidence chain

We sample real records from first touch to closed opportunity and quantify where source, identity, campaign, or role context breaks.

    Decision artifact

    Trace audit and data-quality baseline

  3. 03

    Implement one trusted model

We align campaigns, sync rules, relationships, attribution logic, reconciliation, and dashboards around the highest-value question.

    Decision artifact

    Working model with record-level validation

  4. 04

    Operationalize the model

We assign metric owners, document changes, monitor quality, and train teams to use the model without overstating certainty.

    Decision artifact

    Governance playbook and reporting cadence

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you implement marketing attribution across HubSpot and Salesforce?
Yes. We map lifecycle fields, campaign membership, original and recent source, contact and account relationships, opportunity roles, sync ownership, and reporting. We begin with the business decisions the model must support rather than installing a dashboard first.
Which attribution model should we use?
There is no universal best model. First-touch is useful for discovery, sourced pipeline for creation, and influence for complex buying journeys. We often publish more than one view, but each has a precise question, rules, and confidence level so they are not blended into one misleading number.
Do we need a dedicated attribution product?
Not always. Salesforce Campaigns, Campaign Influence, HubSpot, and a disciplined data model may be enough. A dedicated product can help with journey collection and modeling at scale, but it cannot repair unclear lifecycle definitions or missing opportunity relationships.
How do you handle anonymous web activity?
We preserve approved acquisition context and connect it when a person identifies themselves, within your consent and retention policies. We distinguish observed, matched, and inferred relationships instead of presenting all identity resolution as certain.
Why do Salesforce and HubSpot totals disagree?
Common causes include different date fields, lifecycle definitions, currency handling, campaign rules, deleted or merged records, sync timing, and opportunity-contact gaps. We reconcile totals to named systems of record and expose remaining differences rather than hiding them.
